  • Day of the Dead 
  • Día de los Muertos

What is it?

  • Originated in Mexico
  • Honors the dead
  • Beliefs:
    • Midnight on October 31, spirits of children are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours
    • November 2, the spirits of the adults are allowed to reunite with their families

How do you celebrate?

  • Altars
  • Sugar skulls
  • Offerings of deceased favorite food and drink
  • Visiting graves to leave offerings

All Saints Day

Also known as:

  • All Hallows' Day; 
  • Hallowmas; 
  • Feast of All Saints; 
  • Solemnity of All Saints

What is it?

  • Christian (especially Catholic) festival celebrated in honour of all saints
  • One day out of a 3 day festival known as Allhallowtide (All Hallows' Eve (Oct 31), All Hallows' Day (Nov 1), All Souls' Day (Nov 2)

How do you celebrate?

  • Catholics attend mass
  • Offerings to the dead
  • Flowers and wreaths laid on graves
