The Saxophone Player

Iskara Terahnova’s fingers danced over her sax, filling the holes left by the other players, never dictating the music. Between sets of the jam session, she separated herself.

Another musician, one of the not-quite-regulars, asks why she missed the last session? She would smile, dropping the temperature twenty degrees and reply, “Working.” 

The real regulars, the broken asteroid miners, the college students who all wanted to be the next Duke? They set the dance, asked no questions. The scarred man without a past bought her a “rum and coke, hold the rum.” 

Warm smiles, touched glasses. “To Dreams that end.”
