Scout the area.
Plan the escape.
Rescue the slave.
What could possibly go wrong?

Mere's continuing her apprenticeship in San Valencia, but when a strange illness affects everyone in the dragon colony including dragons, she's forced to help a pregnant girl find safety.
Rescuing slaves is all in a day's work for Jareem, until a new slaver in town takes exception to Jareem's interference. Now, sick and with a wounded dragon, Jareem must free the slave and find Mere and the pregnant girl before the slaver.
The clock is ticking. The baby's due any day, and the slaver's persistent. Mere and Jareem must reach beyond who they believe themselves to be in order to bring the former slaves home in one piece.

Before long, the green stones brought them outside, and Mere shivered, longing for her coat. “Brr, it’s getting cold.”

“It’s the storm coming in. Aquata may have to race, or we’ll end up detouring into the edge of the woods, making us later than Aunt Alessandra was expecting.” Darryn placed his hands on either of her shoulders. “Are you going to be all right?”

She nodded, not able to speak past the sudden lump in her throat.

“Have I said how proud I am of my favorite niece?”

Mere smiled, trying not to cry. “A few times? Oh, Uncle Darryn, I’m going to miss you!” She flung her arms around him and held on for a long moment, knowing it would be the last time she’d hug her family until the summer. After he was gone, she really would be on her own.

“I’ll give your love to your ma and da. Don’t forget to write us; I want to hear all about your time here. Aunt Alessandra will want to know what you’ve learned. Think you can do that?” He pulled away and set his index finger on her nose.

“Of course. I’ll even figure out how they grow things and write about that too, so you’re not bored with all the healing bits.”

“You know me well.” He glanced up at the clouds advancing across the sky. “Take care.”

“I’ll be fine, Uncle Darryn. Go before you’re caught in this.”

“Goodbye, Mere. I’ll be back to pick you up when your apprenticeship is over.” He mounted his dragon and waved from Aquata’s back.

The loneliness seeped into her with the cold as she watched him grow smaller and smaller, and then the mountain peaks swallowed him.

I will not cry. Aunt Alessandra and Uncle Darryn believe in me. I just wish I did.

But even if she lacked confidence, she could lean on theirs; she would do her best to prove them right. Turning, she headed back to the warmth of the caverns.

About the Author: Even as a young girl, Kandi J Wyatt, had a knack for words. She loved to read them, even if it was on a shampoo bottle! By high school Kandi had learned to put words together on paper to create stories for those she loved. Nowadays, she writes for her kids, whether that's her own five or the hundreds of students she's been lucky to teach. When Kandi's not spinning words to create stories, she's using them to teach students about Spanish, life, and leadership.
