Firstly, don’t judge this book by its cover. If you’re looking for a book based around the game of chess, this isn’t what you’re looking for. However, if you love mythical creatures, taboo situations, and tragic backstories, you’re going to LOVE this book. I liked how the Naiads, like the myths of the Amazons, don’t care about their male offspring and just abandon them. Deejay is doing a wonderful thing, taking all the unwanted kids in. Matt’s need to protect his younger brother and mutual attraction to Deejay that they’re both trying to resist adds some tension to the story. There were a few places when the flow of the story was a little slow for me, but overall I really enjoyed reading this. Make sure you read the trigger warning before picking this up, as some parts may be difficult for some readers. Can’t wait to dive into book two!
Knight to Castle Two
Loki:
Surviving as a human in the world of Non-Humans means that every breath I’ve taken for twelve years could have been my last. If the Demons don’t kill me, the Elves might. Or my brother. I love him, but I love him too much, and I’ve known since I was a kid I didn’t feel all that brotherly toward him. We might not share genetics, but that’s no excuse. I could probably hide these feelings if he didn’t return them. I work non-stop to keep myself out of temptations claws, but as his birthday draws closer, the will to keep my hands off fractures more and more. The only thing binding me to my hands-off rule is a contract I have with a Diviner, but that might not be enough.

My brother has never laid a finger on me, but as my powers grow, so does my need to connect. I can burn every inch of his skin, but my powers keep growing and burning him isn’t enough anymore. A great new addition to the trilogy. I liked that Loki, despite his name, is actually human. There are, again, taboo situations, but for me that just adds to the story. This felt real. Loki’s actions and the trials they go to just keep you turning pages, waiting to see if they can fulfill their desire to be together. I really fell in love with Loki and Gage, and I think you will too. Getting to know them better was wonderful, and their drive and loyalty to each other was absolutely heart-warming, despite some heart-pounding and gut-wrenching moments in the book. Definitely not your typical love story, but one I would say feels more real than the fairy-tale ones you often find in the romance genre. Definitely recommend and looking forward to the final book!
Queen to King Three
Robbie:
I never would have guessed that the best thing to happen to me would be getting abandoned in a stranger’s driveway. My stepmother has always hated me, but she finally found a place to dump me: her brother’s demesne.
I’m broken, small, and terrified of everything, but my Humanities teacher makes me feel almost normal. I don’t know why my body, mind, and heart have latched onto Chanda Marduke, but I’ll take it, even if it’s the most dangerous, terrifying thing I’ve ever done.

Until I walked into my classroom to find a pretty little guy reading one of the textbooks, I had no idea what temptation was. I wish I could give this more than a 5! What a way to end a trilogy. I highly recommend reading books 1 and 2 before reading this one, although some previous events are revisited, and the author was nice enough to include a timeline in the back of the book if you need a quick refresh. This book answers so many questions and brings everything full circle. I’m grateful I was able to read each book in quick succession. I don’t think I could’ve waited! I don’t want to give away too much, but Chandra isn’t who I thought he was, and Robbie’s strength after all he faced just fills my heart with joy, even as it breaks for what he survived. I love how these characters are real. and the situations they face keep you turning pages, hoping they succeed and get their HEA. As much as I loved this book, I’m a little sad the trilogy is over, and I won’t be reading more about these characters I met in this series that are so broken, healing, strong, and down to earth. Can’t recommend this trilogy enough.

Chanda:
On the way home, I stop by the grocery store closest to my house. The tiny little supermarket hosts a butcher counter at that back, famous among Houston locals for the skill of the men who work behind it. The butcher counter opens at ten in the morning and stays open until seven in the evening. The twins who work behind the counter co-own the store. They take orders and butcher meats to the specifications of their customers. It’s such an interesting process that they installed a viewing window specifically for spectators to watch them work, hence their claim to fame; people come from all over Houston to watch them.
I have spent hours upon hours standing in their store watching them. The expert way they handle the variety of knives and meats both entertains and creates an almost hypnotic rhythm. I know this kind of thing doesn’t appeal to everyone; I’ve often overheard people discussing the butchers and their trade negatively, but I enjoy watching.
Today I have no time for leisure. I have homework too, way more than I assign my kids, and I want to get it done at a reasonable hour, so I grab a quick and easy dinner of a single serve pizza that allegedly feeds two. Because I feel guilty for eating pizza more than anything else, I also grab a bag of carrots as punishment. I despise them.
So adult of me: eating carrots.

Jennifer Cody writes gay romance of a variety of sub-genres, though her favorite is paranormal/urban fantasy. She uses her husband’s vast knowledge of all things man and mechanical to help her write, but takes literary license with her characters because they’re romantic heroes, thereby making him shake his head in disbelief almost as often as she causes his incredulous laughter.
