Excerpt

The self is ever-evolving, so changes are inevitable. Who you are today isn’t necessarily who you will be tomorrow, so when we seek to find our self, well, that’s easy, but it must be checked out daily as it is ever-changing. We are our beliefs, our judgments, and our thoughts. It seems to be more worth your while to let go of most beliefs and judgments and then just get curious about life. You will begin to see the possibilities and choices, and that’s where you find out who you are.

I heard my four-year-old grandson say to himself, “Who am I?”

I asked him, “What did you just say?” and he repeated, “Who am I?”

As he held his little forehead, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry for him. So I said to him, “Well, you are James; you are a wonderful, thoughtful, happy little boy who is loved very much by everyone around him.”

Then he said, “But where did I come from?” I told him it was like his mama told him: he grew inside of her tummy and then when it was time, he was born. At that point our conversation was interrupted, and so we did not continue.

It would have been fun to see where that conversation might have gone; maybe someday we will do that. Wisdom flows through us whether we are young or old. I am guessing that he heard something on a T.V. show that led him to these thoughts. But, who knows: maybe he was having a little guy universal mind experience?

It’s a good question, “Who am I?” I know I went on a search to try to find out who I was, in my twenties. Then I had a baby and those thoughts went on the back burner, with no time to return to them for quite a while. I think that when we ask this question about the self, we think that if we look outside of our self we will somehow find the answer. But it has become quite apparent to me that we need to look within to find this answer. So, we are back to going to our peaceful mind.

In our mind I think we are who we are told we are. This will change from day to day and situation to situation. From small children, like my grandson, we are told who we are by the way we are treated and by the way we begin to perceive ourselves in relation to others. If people tell us we never good enough then we start to believe this. Every time we try something new the thought arises of “I don’t think I am good enough to play baseball or ride a bike.” If we are told we are outspoken, then we act that way. I think our self evolves from others’ perspective of us mostly, along with of course, our beliefs and thoughts. The exciting thing about this is we can change the belief and change the thought, so we can be anything we choose to be at any moment in time.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I live in Canada. This is where my husband Rae and I have raised our two daughters; they are our absolute pride and joy in life. Along with a career in nursing, I received my B.A. in psychology at the University of Manitoba. I have also undertaken the study of developing an understanding of the three principles of mind, consciousness, and thought. This understanding has enhanced my life immeasurably. Following a workplace head injury and depression, I went through a long climb back to health. I learned of an ever-present, inner psychological health that I have always had and just needed to understand once again. The result of this knowledge has led me to a life of peace, contentment, and love. I hope this book will lead you to a similar place.
