About the Book:

“Transit Lounge” is a contemporary book consisting of short incidents, observations and reflections while travelling to 30 countries across six different continents during the last 15 years.

The book is a personal account of travels to places in Africa, South America, Asia, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

It was interesting to observe all these different cultures and people from an Indian perspective. The book is a compilation of small incidents and events during such travels; it includes losing an air ticket, dealing with difficult custom officials or getting mugged in a prime location in a foreign country.

Snippets from Sunil’s travel:

One of the most famous things in Copenhagen is legendry sculpture of “the little mermaid”. Arguably it is the most photographed lady on earth. The story goes like the little mermaid falls in love with a prince. She wants to give up her life as a mermaid and live a life like human for the prince to accept her. She goes to a witch and the witch gives her a potion. After drinking the potion the mermaid loses her tongue and becomes mute. She gets the legs, though it pains and bleeds a lot when she walks on the land. The sad end of the story is that the prince does not love her even then and she keeps on waiting.

There have been multiple versions of the stories with some disputes but all agree to the sad end.

A Danish friends told me that the little mermaid would be sent to China that year for some world exhibition. More than anything, he was worried if Denmark will get the same statue back or too many of them given China’s reputation for copy and mass production.

The moment our train entered Venice, the experience was overwhelming. It was like moving into the sea. The great thing about this city is – it is preserved so well and gives a good glimpse of the medieval Europe. It is a totally different way of life in the city.

There are no motor vehicles. The only mode of communication there, are water-taxis that run like bus services in any other city. Most of the house doors and windows open into sea water and the water is unbelievably clean and fresh. It must have been a thriving center of culture, art and religion – it still is. It is also a wonder in town planning and civic amenities.

The city is something that will always leave an imprint on anyone who visits it – there is probably no other city like Venice in the world.

Sunil is a software professional with over two decades of experience in the field of banking technology. Currently he is working with Infosys and has earlier worked with McKinsey, Accenture and I-flex solutions. As part of work he travelled to more than 30 countries across six continents. This constituted the basis of his current book.

Sunil is an MBA from IIM-Lucknow and holds a B.Tech from IIT(ISM), Dhanbad. He completed his schooling in Bokaro Steel City.
