Ava and Aden lived their entire childhood together, but one night, after a stolen kiss, Aden mysteriously leaves the Ivanovs’ mansion. Since that night, the two have gone their separate ways. Aden is one of the seven sentinels in charge of protecting the city, Ava, a simple medical student. They meet outside the city and Ava learns more about herself and her origins. The hard shell she has built for herself will be shattered by her feelings for her childhood friend, Aden. However, outside the protective city, she no longer controls anything. Between dream and reality, persuasion and enchantment, are all her feelings real?

Where do I start? The characters and world were so well-developed. There are elements of the world that are reminiscent of some of the more classic dystopian stories; an overbearing state that demands obedience, rulers that control everything, and a ban on learning about the past and the way things were before the current society came into being. On to the characters – I loved Ava from the start. Her curiosity, her strength, her determination, all made me want to know more of her story. There’s just something about her, I can relate to, and it made this story much more immersive for me. A great story that anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction is sure to love reading.
