This was a great opener for a new series that’s sure to capture the imagination of both young and older adult readers. Hest has lived an extraordinary life, and it all comes to a head during a war. He’s faced with an almost impossible choice, and while I won’t give spoilers here, by the time he reaches that decision you’ve already fallen in love with him as a character. The world is well-developed and rich, and even the supporting characters have quite a bit of depth. I’m definitely looking forward to book two!
