Entering the witness relocation program after lawfully escaping a massive walled-in prison, teenage Merrill tries to fit into our society. Her background and decisions may not let her.
Maz, Origin is a story of growth and love, guilt and innocence, and changing goals. What is morally right and what is legally right? What’s legal for humans may not be for aliens…

I heard shots being fired from below. They were aiming at the helicopter or the guy that landed on the scaffolding above me. The sign offered some level of protection, but they’d move into position directly below shortly. “It’s ok, miss, we’ll have you out of here in a jiff. Are you hurt?” The man began to wiggle through the bars, which was no small feat because he was wearing some sort of heavy armor.
He reached down toward me, and I hesitated, terrified of grabbing that hand and leaving my life behind. He clenched his teeth in frustration and urged me, “Come on, miss! Just take my hand.”
Gunfire from below decided for me. I lifted my good arm, and he latched onto me. As he jerked me upwards, pain shot through my shoulder and abdomen. I gave up life and slipped into darkness.

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?
One of the greatest reasons for reading is to be someone else for a while – to go and live in their shoes and learn their lessons and expand my thinking. I’m not sure I could narrow it down to wanting to be any one person anymore.
What did you do on your last birthday?
I got a massage and spent time with my True Love – my husband who takes good care of me.
What part of the writing process do you dread?
The advertising. I’m not sure we can count that, but I enjoy writing the initial draft in whatever order it demands to be told. The editing can be fun as I play with words and breathe life and details into the story. Getting feedback is a rollercoaster of both amazing and painful. Applying the feedback can be a little rough, but again, it’s making the story live. Preparing final copies can be a chore, but the end of that is a celebration of joy. But… figuring out how to get my stories into the hands of people who might enjoy them – that’s tough and something I need to work at.
Do you ever suffer from writerβs block? If so, what do you do about it?
I do! My preferred way to deal with writer’s block is to go to a gaming/fiction convention and attend random panels and talk with people. I always come home inspired with stories trying to escape.

Maz, Origin took a couple of years to write. It’s another fiction to science-fiction with a little bit of romance thrown in. The main character is rough around the edges and goes from a teen to an adult over the course of the book, growing into herself and learning to care about others. She starts off in a prison and goes to space, but you’ll have to read it to find out how that happens. It has illustrations by my long-time friend, Chris Rubenstahl.

Sounds like a great read.
Thank you!
I love the ending of the excerpt. Sounds like she is letting go to die, entering the unknown. But I’m guessing it’s not that. Makes me want to read more.
It’s really close to “letting go to die”. That’s part of the first chapter. The book’s beginning is over on my website if you’d like to read that.
Great interview
Thank you!
