“I need to learn how to control my magic.”
“I know just the someone who can help with that,” Soli says.
“I am certain that Lidja doesn’t want to spend more time with me today.”
“Interesting.” Soli’s smile is back, sly. “But I wasn’t talking about Lidja. I was talking about Dae.”
I fight the urge to duck under the blanket.
“Things are different here, Ala. No one is going to care who you like, or who you kiss. You don’t have to hide how you feel about someone.”
“Who says I’m feeling anything for anyone?”
Soli’s grin grows. “Daesen says Lidja is all blade and bite, like the edge of autumn as it cuts into winter.”
“And Dae himself?”
“Lidja says he’s butter and corn. Like the steamiest, hottest day of summer.”
A laugh slips from my lips, surprising us both.
Soli folds her leg beneath her, eyes sparkling. “Do you like one of them? It’s all right if you do.”
“Lidja hates me. Dae…” I pick at the bedsheet. “Dae flirts with rocks.”
“And they probably flirt right back. But how do you feel?”
“I don’t know.”
She tugs me upward, away from the bed, toward the wardrobe. Shirts and breeches fly from her fingers to the floor. Daesen’s clothes, although some are clearly too narrow and short for his broad, tall frame. Why are there such small clothes in his room?
Soli picks up a black blouse from the back with matching black breeches and holds the color against me. “Very Lidja. Do you think it suits you?”
“Soli.”
