After fifteen-year-old Simon Porte’s family is killed in an automobile crash, his father’s brother, whom he’s never met, brings Simon to live with him and his wife in upstate New York. Simon doesn’t trust Uncle Raymond, and for good reason. Raymond is dying and using his diabolical powers to take over Simon’s body. Simon must develop his own supernatural defenses to survive. With his dotty great-aunt, his young sister, and a pair of odd twins, he wages war against the evil Raymond and his cronies.

This was an eerie, creepy story that will have supernatural chills running down your spine. Simon’s life has been turned upside down, and it only gets worse when he goes to live with an aunt and uncle he’s never known. Levinson did a great job of building the tension, and slipping in clues that things aren’t quite right early on. I loved Great Aunt Lucinda, she’s a great character, and although a bit off-kilter in her own way, she has much better energy than Simon’s aunt and uncle. Overall, the characters had a nice amount of depth, even though at times they feel more movie character worthy than like real life people, (no complaints). If you’re looking for a YA book that will get you spooked, then you’re going to want to grab this.
