This was a fun, brilliant adventure, that kids and adults are sure to enjoy. While I struggle to completely describe this book, think Roald Dahl vibes when it comes to the descriptions, but Percy Jackson when it comes to the adventures involved. The descriptions are unique, but paint a surprisingly clear picture (giraffe stuffed in a human suit, anyone? And no, I won’t tell you what that’s from, you’ll have to read to find out). The story itself moves along at a good clip, with twists, turns, unforgettable characters, and new places to explore. I love the world Lilac has built, and I cannot wait to go on more adventures with Root in the future.

I came into this world madly in love with stripes, and I have continued this love affair well into adulthood. Thin along a pant leg or wall-papery thick, it matters not. As they say, “A good stripe is half the battle!” And I couldn’t agree more.

I was also born with stories clinging to my chest. Certainly, that could have been the twine of my twin sister, but she in no way clings to me now whereas the stories have remained. For this, I am exceedingly grateful.

My writing hours consist of tea (cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper) and a well-worn thesaurus named Pluck. My non-writing hours brim with old time swing music, snorting laughter, homemade goodies, off-leash dog runs, and quiet contemplation in the company of flowers and finches.

I enjoy phrases like ‘anywhositwhatsit’.
