This is an adorable book, full of new friends, and plenty of curiosity. Zog is so adorable, and while he might be an alien, he comes across as an inquisitive kid from the start. I love how Sam and Max take Zog to meet various important adults in their community, and each adult encourages Zog to keep questioning and learning while also answering his questions as best as they can. There’s a nice balance struck between what we can prove with science, and things that we rely on faith for. Although there is some discussion of religion, it isn’t the main focus of the book, and is very inclusive to many belief systems, which I greatly appreciated. This is the perfect book for more advanced elementary readers, or middle grade and up. Whether read as a standalone or read along, the cute illustrations and fun story are sure to be enjoyed!

It wasn’t until Zog was halfway to the Great Museum of Exploration that he realized—he’d forgotten his lamp.

Luckily, all the questions about whether it was even possible to go off-world were bright enough to light the way.

As Zog crept through the vast halls, he noticed just how empty the museum was. Without the usual crowds, he could finally lose himself in the exhibits without worrying about bumping into anyone.

His footfalls echoed across the crystal floor as towering displays vied for his attention—relics from a time when Luminites still explored the cosmos, hungry for knowledge and driven by curiosity.

Gleaming spacecraft, artifacts from distant planets, and flickering holograms of strange life forms filled the space with silent testimony. Zog’s soft blue glow shimmered with intensity, casting long shadows between the displays.

On Luminos, everyone was blue. It was the colour of certainty—measured, tested, confirmed. The brightness of a Luminite’s glow was a telltale sign that something was on their mind.

Adam Rice is a first-time author who believes that curiosity is one of the most important things we can share with our children. Zog’s Big Question grew out of late-night conversations, big family questions, and a love for exploring new ideas together. Adam lives in Canada with his spouse and three kids.
