Adrienne travels the world advising governments on behalf of her country. She doesn’t have time for her son Daniel. Boarding school offers an answer. But for Daniel, being Jewish in an English boarding school in the 1960s is a nightmare.

Eleanor has signed up as a sleeper with MI5. She and lyrical Irish builder Barrie, the love of her life, move to a perfect country cottage, and when a traumatised Daniel finds refuge there, he thinks he’s found his safehouse. But both Eleanor and Barrie hide deep secrets that fracture his fragile tranquillity with terrifying consequences.

This was an enjoyable read, with quite the literary tilt to the narrative style, and felt a lot like the literary fiction you could find in the mid 20th century. It takes a bit for the story to pick up, but once it does, it’s hard to put down. The characters are varied and interesting, with separate storylines, and waiting to see how they’ll converge only adds to the suspense. We get a nice background on the characters, learning about them with snippets of their lives before they changed. The scenes are described vividly enough that you can see them unfold before you, which just adds to immersion in the story. I loved the depth they had, and how real they felt. It’s not your typical modern thriller, set shortly after the end of WWII this has its own charm, and is the perfect mix of suspense, thriller, and literary fiction.

About the Author

Having suffered the horrors of being a Jew in an early 1970s English boarding school, I have had a lifetime interest in the choices that parents make. My four decades as a financial adviser gave me considerable insight into the lives of families: their hopes and fears, their feuds and priorities, and I knew I wanted to write a page- turning thriller.

At the age of 64 I started to write Safehouse; I loved the writing process and now I have the joy of a novel which was completed in 2022 and launched at London’s most famous Bookshop, Foyles in Charing Cross.

I live in London and the tiny south coast village of Mudeford. My wife, Jude, is my Editor and we discuss the characters and plot as we walk by the sea and in the woods.
