Gabe’s Casts of Courage: A Tale of Bravery During Diagnosis

Gabe’s world turns upside down when his parents notice something unusual about his shoulder. What follows is a journey filled with doctors, tests, and a series of casts designed to help his spine grow straight. With courage, love, and a little bit of fun along the way, Gabe learns to adapt to his new reality. Through it all, he discovers his own strength and becomes a true Scoli Warrior.

This heartwarming story is a tribute to the bravery of children facing medical challenges and the families who support them.

This book is a brilliant resource not just for kids facing down scary medical tests, but especially for kids with Early Onset Scoliosis. The illustrations are so cute, and match the rhyming story well. Having just gone through a lot of (new to me) procedures and surgery last year, I can totally understand why Gabe would be nervous! I can’t imagine how much more frustrating having to avoid water and sand would be as a kid, when I found it really frustrating after my surgery. But the book frames it well, also listing the good things that come with diagnosis and treatment. Overall, this book made everything seem a lot less scary, and I can see how it would help kids who have never gone through any of it. At the end, there’s a nice set of resources regarding Early Onset Scoliosis that parents might find helpful. Definitely a book I’d recommend!
