The Pros and Cons of Writing Children’s Books

It lends itself to so many subgenres that, in itself, can be both a pro and a con.

Pros:

My past and current professions give me a great deal of material for writing children’s books since I used to be a nanny and now work with children in another capacity.

I love the open expressions on children’s faces and in their manner when they come upon something new. I love their curiosity and willingness to see things for more than what they are. Their imaginations are vast and their ability to adapt is unparalleled.

All of these characteristics fill my library of personalities for my characters. It allows me to mold my protagonist, making him seem more realistic. The same with the places I portray in my books. I visit these places before I write my first word. I take in the environment and what each site offers and transfer them into a fictional world that entertains children with the bright colors and images that can only be found if they search. The ultimate pro in regards to writing children’s books is that I can create another experience for them to ask questions, build their imagination and be entertained.

Cons:

Some of the cons are just the opposite side of the coin to the pros. There is so much material, sometimes it is hard to sort through it all to select the exact right mannerisms and expressions for my protagonist without giving them multiple personalities because I want use everything. The worlds are endless unless I have a set outline that I am only willing to deviate from in the minutest way.

It is important to choose a very focused niche and have your story translate properly. I have found that the more focused children’s books are, the more clear they are which leaves little wiggle room once you have set your character on a certain path.

One more con is that, unlike fiction novels, there are illustrations to consider and that can get costly if you choose a professional illustrator whereas a fictional novel relies on words to paint all of the pictures in writing.

I love writing children’s books even through the cost, outline and structure of the creative process can be daunting. I think the smile on a child’s face while reading and looking through the pages is worth it.

Sugarplum Zoo and Chocolates is the house of many majestic, rare and strong animals like camels, zonkeys (Yes! You read it right. Zonkeys), sheep pigs, kookaburra, and many more.
