This was a captivating epic fantasy, that truly checks all the boxes – thrilling action, high stakes, heart-breaking scenes, and moments that will have your heart in your throat. Snaerravn does an excellent job bringing everything to life before your eyes, and I felt like I was watching a thrilling, epic movie unfold. It’s so easy to get lost in the story, especially in Amnon’s desire for revenge, as he’s accidentally thrust into the midst of everything by it. While not what I’d call your typical hero in appearance, there’s something about him that you can’t help but like, and I love that he’s not what you’d call your typical hero. The characters that surround him are just as unique and complex, and it’s clear that a lot of work went into fleshing them all out, and they all balance out well, without anything feeling overwhelming or overdone. The story moves along at a good pace, and there are no large info dumps that feel overwhelming or big lulls in the story. If you’re a fan of the LOTR books/movies, or the game Baldur’s Gate, or playing TTRPGs like D&D you’ll absolutely fall in love with this!

The four Druids carried me deeper into the labyrinth of passages and great caverns that perforated the mountain, leaving the company behind. They obviously knew their way or followed a trail that was invisible to me. The torches illuminated sparkling mineral deposits and bright veins running in the walls, and the passages multiplied, as did the number of small chambers. I carefully memorized what I could in hopes that I might somehow escape and trace my way back to freedom. After a few minutes, Tlacht’ga spitefully threw me to the ground. Not hard enough to injure me but none too gently either. Wolf bitch! Dornoll lit a small satchel smelling of lavender and other herbs unfamiliar to me, and I realized these were to reduce my resistance. They must have needed something badly from me to go to all this trouble. In their place I would have simply slit my throat and left the body for the wolves. They clasped hands and chanted, and despite my desperate attempts to focus my mind, I succumbed to the circle spell.
