Jake and Dave Fly a Kite

Level 5 Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories Book 2

by Tammy Harris

Orton Gillingham Decodable Stories Level 5: Jake and Dave Fly a Kite is a structured decodable reader designed for developing readers practising phonics through the Orton Gillingham approach.

This Level 5 story provides focused practice with magic e words in which the silent e makes the preceding vowel long. Readers practise the patterns a_e, i_e, and o_e, the trigraph dge as in budge, and the suffix s added to magic e words while keeping the silent e.

Carefully controlled text helps children apply previously learned phonics skills while building accurate decoding, fluency, confidence, and reading independence.

About the Story

Jake and Dave ride their bikes to the park to fly Jake’s kite. The wind is strong, and the kite flies high before getting stuck in a tree.

Dave climbs up to get the kite, and the friends continue their day at the park. They race to the swings and slide, have a snack, feed the birds, and ride their bikes home.

5 out of 5 fairies

This is a great book for beginning readers to learn more and build confidence in their skills. The pictures match the story well, providing context clues for words kids might not know. The sentences are short, and easy to read and sound out. There isn’t a lot of text on each page, making it easier to focus on the new words and sounds that are there. Even if not following the Orton-Gillingham method, this book would be perfect to help new readers build skills and confidence, and be easy for them to read on their own after reading with an adult.
